Charles R. Thomas, M.D.

86 of Greenwood passed away February 5, 2019. He was born on April 17, 1932 in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late Charles Gale & Mary Margaret Thomas. Charles graduated from Arsenal Technical High school in 1950, Indiana University in 1954 and Indiana University Medical School in 1958. Upon graduating medical school, Charles began practicing medicine in Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB-GYN) in 1962, retiring in 1994. As an OB-GYN, Charles delivered over 7,000 babies and performed countless other medical procedures. During his medical career, Charles began studying the art of Winemaking. In 1984, he started and developed this passion into a second career. After retiring from his medical practice, he became the Winemaker and President of Chateau Thomas Winery. His wines have won countless awards, not only locally, but internationally. While being the Winemaker, Charles invented and patented Slender, the world's only sugar-free wine using natural, calorie-free sweetener. This wine was presented to Hollywood stars for the 81st annual Academy Awards. Charles has written many medical papers, four of which were published in scientific books. He has also written articles on wine, which have appeared in multiple publications. Charles has authored two books on wine; The Chateau Thomas Table: Pairing to Perfection and Practical Wine Talk – Winemaker Examines Wine.

Other significant accomplishments include: Awarded Sagamore of the Wabash; Awarded Key to the City of Indianapolis by two mayors (Richard Lugar and Steve Goldsmith); President, Medical Staff of St. Francis Hospital, Beech Grove, IN; President, Marion County Medical Society; Member and President of the Indianapolis Police Department Merit Board; Invited to the White House for a dinner with the President of the United States, and POTUS drank Chateau Thomas wine. Among his many wine affiliates are: Confrerie des Chevalies du Tastevin and Confrerie de la Chaines du Rotisseurs.

Charles' hobbies, besides winemaking, include spending time with his family and friends, watching IU basketball, traveling, billiards, cooking, reading and shooting free throws.

Charles was preceded in death by wife, Jill Thomas, son Ryan C. Thomas and stepson Scott Theiss. Charles is survived by his children, Steven (Elizabeth) Thomas, Madison, IN; Linda Hastings, Fairland, IN; Karen Thomas, Indianapolis, IN; Leigh Ann (Bill) Fricke, Lafayette, IN; Wendy (Mark) Alexa, Prospect, KY and stepson Thomas (Barbara) Theiss, Indianapolis, IN. Grandchildren: Kelly Thomas, Liam Thomas, Lindsey Nicholson, Kirsten Alexa, Cameron Alexa and Conor Thiess, Three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his special friend, Susan Bass.

A visitation will be held Friday, February 8, 2019 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service & Crematory, Greenwood Chapel 481 W. Main Street. A celebration of Charles' life will be held 12:00 PM Saturday at Concordia Lutheran Church 305 Howard Road, Greenwood with visitation from 10:00 AM to service time. He will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Fraternal Order of Police or American Heart Association.
