Tribute & Message From The Family

William (Bill) C. Rathjen went to be with the Lord the night of February 5th, 2018 at the age of 83.

Bill was born October 9th, 1934 to William and Lydia Rathjen in Jacob, Illinois, the youngest of nine children. He married Barbara M. (Kenon) Rathjen on April 9th, 1955. In their 62 years together, they moved to Northwest Indiana and were blessed with three children and nine grandchildren, before moving to Indianapolis and welcoming five great-grandchildren. Before retirement, Bill was an Iron Worker from Local 395 and was employed by Pangere Corporation for 37 years. His work ethic and energy continued well into his later years.

Bill filled his life with family, friends, and faith. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, where he served as a trustee and met many of his closest friends. Bill's family was his greatest pride; he told anyone who would listen about his deep love for them and how lucky he was. His favorite pastimes were fishing and hunting, both of which he did with family and friends. Bill's laughter, hugs, and over-the-top storytelling made him one-of-a-kind. He was greatly loved and is greatly missed.

Bill has reunited with loved ones who went before him, including his parents, eight siblings, daughter Debra Rathjen, and grandson Craig Rathjen. He is survived by his wife Barbara; children William (Judy) Rathjen, and Candace (Todd) Kendrick; eight grandchildren: Jeremy (Heidi) Rathjen, Andrew (Melissa) Rathjen, Steven (Laura) Rathjen, Rachel (Jonathan) Schmidt, Rebecca Kendrick, Hannah Kendrick, Ryan Rathjen, and Dusty Nicholson.

Visitation will be held Sunday, February 11th from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at St. John Lutheran Church, 6630 Southeastern Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46203. The funeral service will follow beginning at 3:30 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Condolence & Memory Journal

Candy, my condolences on the passing of your dad. Losing a parent is an unbearable loss, especially one as special as your father. I pray memories of your life together and the love he showered upon you will fill the empty place in your heart and ease your sorrow. He will be greatly missed.
Barb, my heartfelt condolences to you and your family. I recall the two of you at the ball games and would think to myself, what a nice family. The smile on his face is just as I remember. I am so sorry! In your time of sorrow may you feel the love of Jesus all around you and know the love of family and friends as they keep you in their thoughts and prayers. My heart is so sad for all of you. May God continue to bless you and your family and keep you in His care. Donna Kvachkoff, Danny and Kathy's mom

Candy, Barb & family, We are so sorry for the loss of Bill. He was a phenomenal man and an excellent softball coach. As our third base coach, I will never forget his exuberant style of swinging his arm around, signaling to me to round third base and quickly head for home....He was a risk taker, that is what made him such a great coach. Then he'd have that one big clap at the end of every good play. Such a super man to know growing up... Thinking of you and your family this evening.
