Tribute & Message From The Family

Erik "Rik" Spencer passed away Wednesday, June 12, in Greenwood, Indiana. Rik was born to the late Thomas and Betty Spencer in Louisville, Kentucky.
Rik graduated from Waco High School in Waco, Texas. During college, Rik attended Texas A&M, The University of Maryland in Ramstein, Germany, and one semester at Indiana University. He eventually returned to Texas A&M earning his major in English and his minor in History. Rik married the love of his life, Judy Beneville on October 23, 1965. Rik was a devoted pastor and pastored many Presbyterian churches in Indiana, including Forest Hill, Greenwood, Connersville, Ossian, Reid Memorial in Richmond, College Corner, and Boggstown. Before giving a message, Rik always opened with a joke. One of Rik's favorite things to do was to send out a daily morning email joke to his entire address list. Rik was actively involved in the Greenwood Rotary Club. He was an avid golfer. Most of his vacation involved, golfing, and eating good seafood. He was a member of the fly-fishing club, however he never fly fished, he attended the meetings to make flies but most importantly, he enjoyed the German cuisine they offered. Rik loved his quiet time at Camp Pyoca, canoeing and fishing on the lake. The Spencer family went on many camping trips that involved canoeing. One of the most memorable trips was on the Current River in Missouri. In Rik's free time he enjoyed reading, especially Harry Potter and mystery spy books. When Craig was young, Rik coached many of his sports teams including, baseball, soccer and basketball.
Rik is survived by his wife of 53 years, Judy Spencer. One son, Craig Spencer, a brother Marc Spencer. One granddaughter, Olivia K. Spencer, and two nephews, Robert Grimes and Michael B. Grimes. Rik is also survived by one sister in law, Helen Grimes, along with several nieces and one nephew out of state.
Rik is preceded in death by his siblings, Kent Spencer, and Lia Beth Spencer Studdard.
A celebration of life will be held at 3 P.M. on June 29, 2019, at Greenwood Presbyterian Church 102 W. Main St. Greenwood, Indiana. Following the service friends and family may gather in the Fellowship Hall until 6 P.M.

I was so sad to hear of Rik's passing this week--way too soon! He was a great guy, and wonderful pastor to so many people, especially Boggstown. He leaves a large space on God's earth

Judy, the Boggstown congregation has truly been blessed to have had Rik as our minister. His sermons were so well thought out & so true to Christ's teaching. We are so sorry to see him go. I know Ric would have liked it this way because it was Gods plan for his life. Judy you have our most sincere sympathy for the loss of Ric. From time to time you will feel his presence when you are not even thinking about him. Cherish your wonderful memories. We love you.

Together with Rik, I am a member of the Greenwood Rotary. I enjoyed his stories and his even handed approach to all things good and even those not so good. He will be missed in our city and our club. Rest In Peace: Jon Williams
