Tribute & Message From The Family

Barbara "Barb" Rathjen went to be with the Lord the morning of October 14th, 2021 at the age of 82.

Barb was born April 1st, 1939 to Orbie and Emanuel Kenon in Gorham, Illinois. She married William Rathjen on April 9th, 1955. In their 62 years together, they moved to Northwest Indiana and were blessed with three children and nine grandchildren, before moving to Indianapolis and welcoming four great-grandchildren. Before retirement, Barb was a bus driver in Merrillville, Indiana for many years. More recently, she enjoyed her time as a receptionist at Attitudes Hair Salon.

Barb's life was full of family, friends, faith, and fun. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church. She adored spending time with her family, whether it be making s'mores over the fire or teaching recipes to a new generation. She was very giving to her family; any attempt to pay for dinner was met with ferocious resistance. Little known to many, she was an outstanding bowler in her younger years, and served as a faithful sports mom and getaway driver for her children's shenanigans. Known to be lucky, she was charged with lighting the birthday candles for her grandchildren. In her later years, she took that luck to the casino, where on one trip she famously won on a penny machine. Barb's feisty and charitable character will be forever missed.

Barb has reunited with loved ones who went before her, including her husband, Bill; her parents; four siblings: Jean, Ruth, Dean, and Emanuel; daughter Debra Rathjen; and grandson Craig Rathjen. She is survived by her children, William (Judy) Rathjen and Candace (Todd) Kendrick; eight grandchildren: Jeremy Rathjen, Andrew (Melissa) Rathjen, Steven (Laura) Rathjen, Rachel (Jonathan) Schmidt, Rebecca Kendrick, Hannah Kendrick, Ryan Rathjen, and Dusty Nicholson, and four great-grandchildren: Colton Rathjen, Payson Rathjen, Liam Rathjen, and Owen Rathjen.

Visitation at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Home, 5950 E. Thompson Road, Indianapolis, IN 46237 will be held Sunday, October 17th from 1:00 to 3:00 PM, with funeral service at 3:00 PM. Burial will immediately follow the service at St. John Lutheran Church cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.
