Obituary

Betty J. Summers, 88, passed away on July 31, 2019 at the Franciscan Health Hospice House in Indianapolis. Betty was born in Jasper, Indiana on June 24, 1931, to William H. and Veronica (Streigel) Gehlhausen. She married Dr. Charles Summers on September 16, 1952, and the two enjoyed a long and happy marriage until his death on October 10, 2010.

Betty worked with her husband Charles in his podiatric practice in Greenwood, where she had a firm but warm presence in the office, frequently chiding Charlie for seemingly being unable to manage many of the business aspects of the practice without her. Charlie always said that she ran a tight ship—high praise from a Navy man. Betty worked for the Coca-Cola Bottling Company in Jasper before she and Charles married, and she was an active participant and leader in a state-wide women in business group during the 1960's.

Betty's joy in life was spending time with her close-knit family. She also had many hobbies including memberships in computer and bridge clubs, sewing, cooking, and occasional trips to the horse track or casino. Betty and Charlie enjoyed traveling, taking many trips across the country as well as visits to the Caribbean, Europe, and Asia.

Betty is survived by her three children, Kevin (Kay) Summers of Indianapolis, Karen (Roger) Tearman of Indianapolis, and Kathy (Rick) Pitts of Indianapolis. Betty's joyous family legacy also includes four grandchildren, Joni Fraser of Grand Junction, Colorado, Chuck and Matt Summers of Indianapolis, and Liz Pitts of Indianapolis, as well as three great-grandchildren (Syvannah, Makayla, and Tommy), and a wealth of cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 5, 2019 at Our Lady of the Greenwood Church, 335 South Meridian Street, Greenwood, IN. Friends and family may call Sunday, August 4 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service, 481 West Main Street, Greenwood, IN.
