Carl S. Howard, III
age 72, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 2, 2018 at IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was born October 31, 1945 in Sullivan, Indiana to Carl S. Howard, Jr. and Ruby Rose (McGhee) Howard. He graduated from both Whiteland High School in Whiteland, Indiana and Rollins College-Brevard Campus in Melbourne, Florida.

He retired from the United States Air Force with two tours in Vietnam. He was also an independent truck driver, and worked in real estate, insurance, and securities throughout his life. After officially retiring from the workforce, he spent most of his time volunteering. He was a member of the Johnson County Shrine Club, the Loyal Order of the Moose, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Indiana Freemasons.

While appreciating the camaraderie of his beloved organizations, he mostly enjoyed the service element of the groups. From fundraising to being a Murat Hospital Road Runner for the Shriners Hospitals for Children in Cincinnati, Ohio, his joy was helping others.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruby Rose (McGhee) Howard. He is survived by his father, Carl S. Howard, Jr.; brothers, Jon (Darla) and Leslie (Patricia) Howard; sister, Lisa Hinton; daughter, Dawn (Michael) Lawhorn; son, Carl S. Howard IV; three granddaughters, Tori and Kate Lawhorn, and Courtney Howard; and two great-granddaughters, Mariah and Lillian Cranich.

His family will greet friends from 4-6 pm on Friday, September 7, 2018 at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service & Crematory, Greenwood Chapel, 481 West Main St. in Greenwood, Indiana, and the memorial service will begin at 6 pm.

His final resting place will be beside his beloved mother at Dugger Cemetery in Dugger, Indiana. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, 3229 Burnet Ave, Cincinnati, Ohio 45229, or by phone at 513-872-6118.
He loved his family, a good book, classical music, a fine glass of wine, and a strong cup of coffee.
