Obituary

Gerhard Gennrich, 73, lost his hard-fought battle with colon cancer on Thursday. Gerhard was born in Hamburg, Germany and came to the United States with his family at the age of 5 in 1951. On an immigrant work program, his family worked on the Hapgood family farm. Years later, the family allowed him to have land that he built his own house on and has lived in since 1971. He graduated Manual High School in 1964 and attended IUPUI before enlisting in the Navy where he did two tours as a radarman in Vietnam. He came back and graduated from IUPUI with a business degree and went on to earn his Masters through Indiana Central University. After 35 years he finished his career as a controller for Rexnord Corporation but previously had worked at both BTR and Link Belt. Gerhard retired at 55 in 2002 and really began to pursue his true passions by volunteering at the Indiana State Museum in the paleontology department. Surrounded by his new friends who became his "science family," he participated in and helped fund several Mastodon digs including the McGinty Peccary Cave and Pipe Creek digs. He logged 15,439 hours as a volunteer. Gerhard traveled to schools, nursing homes, and parks to give presentations on the unique fossils that he found from the digs. Gerhard and his wife also loved kids and volunteered in the Greenwood Christian Church Nursery with the 2 year-olds for over 35 years. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Jeanne Gennrich, daughter Laura (Gennrich) Stadtfeld, son-in-law, Eric, sister, Renate Collins, and his grandchildren, Isla and Porter. Services for Gerhard Gennrich are Wednesday, February 26 at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service and Crematory-Greenwood Chapel at 10:00 am with visitation at the funeral home on Tuesday, February 25 from 4-8:00 pm with one additional hour prior to the service on Wednesday. Burial will follow with full military honors at Greenwood Cemetery.
