Obituary

J Ashley Smith was born in Indianapolis on April 25, 1986, and lived 31 years in her home state. Her life was marked by many accomplishments, which we, her family, won't try to list here. Because Ashley wasn't her accomplishments or status, she wasn't her career or what she owned. Ashley was a woman marked by her love for others, and we ought to meditate on that if we aim to honor her well.

Ashley was a quirky woman. Her first name, a single initial which didn't really stand for anything, fit her personality well. Growing up, she had a strong attachment to the color purple, but scoffed at the idea that all her stuff had to be purple. A part of Ashley delightfully remained in the early 2000s; she never stopped saying "Cool beans" or "Coolio." She held onto her Pantech Duo slider phone until she no longer was able to find a useable one on eBay and was forced to upgrade. She lived most of her life in Greenwood, but was a Brown County girl at heart, preferring country roads and hills. Her love for Spongebob Squarepants was unparalleled among kids and adults alike. Her collection of memorabilia and t-shirts is impressive, not to mention her ability to quote the show. Calling Ashley's cell phone and getting her voicemail always meant a trip to Bikini Bottom.

Ashley's time at Ball State University was formative. It was there she met many of her closest friends, and began her pursuit of serving others through her career. Once she was graduated, she became a social worker, changing countless people's lives. Ashley believed in people and their goodness, and she had a way of bringing that out.

Ashley never gave up on family or friends, no matter the situation. She will be remembered for dropping any plans if it meant helping someone she loved, even when it cost her. She spoke of others in the gentlest of terms, traveled to be at their side, served them without complaint. We, her family and closest friends, will miss her sweet smile and the way she loved us.

J Ashley was preceded in death by her father, Mark Smith, and his parents, John and Pauline Smith; her "Mawmaw" Eula Jean Brewer; "Grandpa Bob" King and "Grandpa Cal" Grimme. She is survived by her mother, Regina King and step-father, Mark King; her siblings Heather, Samantha, Chelsea, Richard, and Daniel and their spouses and children; her "Poppy" Roger Brewer and "Grandma Charlotte" Grimme. Because Ashley loved so well, it is impossible to list all those who deserve to be honored in her memory.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made in J Ashley's name to NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, which is an organization which helps people living with serious mental illness, along with supporting their families and friends. We believe this honors J Ashley's memory and her life work. Please visit www.namiindiana.org to give in her honor.
