Jack A. Hawkins, 81, passed away Thursday morning, March 1, 2018. He was a resident of Whiteland.

He was born March 15, 1936 in Tompkinsville, KY to Virgil Allen Hawkins and Delcie Gertrude (White) Hawkins. He married his wife Carroll on March 7, 1982. Survivors include his wife, Carroll Hawkins of Whiteland; three daughters, Susie (fiancé Gary) Wade of Indianapolis, Melinda (Rev. Jack) Heaston of Overland Park, KS, and Cheryl (Gary) Farmer of Mooresville; four sons, David (fiancé Brenda) Hawkins of Whiteland, Jon (Candy) Hawkins of Miami, FL, Mark Mann of Indianapolis, and Jeff (Trish) Mann of Carthage, IN; one sister, Shirley Ann (Buddy) Langford of Greenwood; fifteen grandchildren; and sixteen great grandchildren with two on the way.

He was a 1954 graduate of Southport High School. When he was there, he used to fly model planes in the gymnasium.

Jack worked at Shorty Baker Filling Station in high school, where he washed and did maintenance work on the cars. He later worked as a supervisor for Rielly Tar and Chemical in Indianapolis, and worked in maintenance at Perry Township Schools. He later was employed at Kinnman Towing and Recovery, and most recently selling guns at the Outdoorsman Sports Shop in Greenwood.

Jack had many hobbies. He loved being a gunsmith, hunting, fishing, and leatherworking. He especially loved cars. He used to build race cars with his father, and even worked the Indianapolis 500 on the emergency crew and tech committee. When he was younger, he used to love to race cars with his friend down U.S. 31.

He was also very proud of his Indian heritage.

Visitation hours will take place on Sunday from 1-4PM, at Wilson St.Pierre Funeral Service & Crematory, Greenwood Chapel, 481 W. Main Street, Greenwood. Rev. Jack Heaston will officiate a funeral service at 4PM Sunday at the funeral home.
