Obituary

After a relatively brief, but difficult battle with cancer, J.R. passed away October 14th. He was 45 years old. He was born to Candy and Jim Johnson on August 3rd, 1976, in Mansfield, Ohio. He graduated from Lexington High School with academic honors, meeting all of the requirements for that distinction except for the GPA interestingly enough. He then went on to attend Bowling Green State University, where he was a proud member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He served as the president, at a time when the chapter needed and benefitted from his leadership. His father was a member at Butler, and his Uncle John was one at Bowling Green as well. That was quite special for him, as were the lifelong friendships he made.

After college, J.R. moved to Indianapolis, his father's hometown. For a few years, he worked for Jobsite Supply, a construction equipment supplier downtown. He mainly ran the warehouse, but he was willing to do whatever was asked of him.

In 2002, he joined his dad in what would become his true passion, managing That Place Bar and Grill. Along with his brother, Michael, they built a southside hotspot that created a sense of community. Their motto was "Where Strangers Become Friends", a notion that was very important to them. J.R. loved talking about his legacy of how many marriages, families, and friendships he helped create. He was also very giving and kind, hosting countless fundraisers and benefits. While they had to sell the bar in May due to COVID, the relationships continue.

In October of 2004, J.R. met his future wife Carrye (Primmer), while scouting out a new karaoke guy who still performs on Wednesdays at That Place. They married in 2006, and welcomed a beautiful daughter, Clara, in January of 2011. He balanced running a successful business, being a wonderful husband, and most importantly a devoted father masterfully. He would work until 3 am on a Friday night, and happily wake up to coach her soccer games at 8am on Saturdays. They enjoyed spending time at the family cottage on Little Tippy, going to Kings Island, Universal Studios and Disney World. He made sure every holiday and birthday party were over-the-top, he was the ultimate host.

J.R. was an avid sports fan. He loved the Cincinnati Reds and Bengals, the Indianapolis Colts, and The Ohio State Buckeyes.

J.R. Is survived by his loving wife Carrye, his Daddy's Girl Clara, father Jim Johnson, younger brother Michael Johnson, nieces Julia, Lauren and Ally Roe (parents Quinn and Andy Roe), his Uncle Rod Miller, his Aunt Karen Miller, in-laws John and Cathy Primmer, and many cousins scattered about the country. He was preceded in death by his mother Candy Johnson, Aunt Christine Miller, Uncle John Miller, Uncle Richard (Dick) Johnson, and Aunt Sandy Miller.

J.R. was one of the few people everyone loved. He will be dearly missed.

Visitation with be held Thursday, October 21, 2021, from 1-4pm at Wilson St Pierre Funeral Service & Crematory, 481 W. Main St. Greenwood, IN 46142. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to IU Simon Cancer Center, or Clara's college fund at First Merchants Bank.
