Obituary

Dr. Karl (Buz) M. Koons passed away on Thursday July 21, 2016. He is survived by his loving wife, Dee. L. Koons, who was by his side during his passing. He is also survived by his sons Karl M. Koons III and wife Gina, Christopher Koons and wife Alice, daughter Cynthia (Koons) Bendush and husband Brad, stepson Brian Whitney and wife Audrey, stepdaughter Kelly Roy and husband David, sisters Katherine Bartlett and Elizabeth Kroetz, twelve grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Grandchildren Meagan, Reis and Rhett Whitney, Chapman, Brayden, Karlie, and Kenlie Roy, Courtney (Bendush) Miller, Kole Koons, Nick, John, and Katrina Koons. Karl was a graduate of Broad Ripple high school. He went on to attend Northwestern University Medical School and completed his residency in general surgery at Northwestern. Karl served two years as a Captain in the United States Army as a general surgeon at Ft. Lee, Virginia from 1965 to 1967.

Karl treated many patients during his 30 plus years as a general surgeon in Indianapolis. He practiced at Community Hospital South and East as well as St. Francis Hospital Beech Grove and South Campus. He was a very dedicated, kind and caring physician who was well respected by his peers and his patients. He was known to forgive payment for his surgical services to patients who were unable to afford their care. A rare virtue, indeed. Karl was awarded the Distinguished Service Award from St. Francis Hospital as a surgeon. Karl was on the Board of the Medical History Museum.

Outside of his busy surgical practice, Karl had many hobbies. He enjoyed woodworking in his workshop at home. He created and displayed many of his beautiful pieces of furniture in their home. He was also an avid runner and had participated in marathons. He and his wife, Dee, loved the outdoors. After retiring in 1998, they traveled in their RV to many locations around the US. They enjoyed snow skiing in Colorado, hiking the Grand Canyon and horseback riding at Rainbow Trout Ranch in Colorado.

Karl was a patriotic man. He arranged for every home in his community to have an American flag.

He was a friend to everyone who knew him and will be sadly missed by all.
