Obituary for Mildred E Orme

January 9, 1915 - August 15, 2017
Greenwood, Indiana | Age 102

Mildred McKay Orme, 102 years, went home to be with her heavenly Father on Tuesday, August 15, 2017. She was born in Indianapolis on January 9, 1915, the daughter of Robert and Adeline McKay, the eldest of five children. Mildred and her husband, William "Bill" Orme, graduated together from Southport High School in 1932. They were married on May 16, 1945 in Indianapolis. They were married for 66 inspiring years. She was fondly known as "Mo" by family and friends.
After high school graduation Mildred graduated from Central Normal and Indiana Central College where she studied music and physical education. Mildred taught physical education for nine years in Perry Township schools, primarily at Southport High School from 1935-1944, when she and Bill were married and she became a US Navy officer's wife. After their return to Indianapolis from military service in WW II, she taught four years at Ben Davis HS. Mildred spent some years at home with her children and then returned to teach at the elementary level and this sparked a whole new world of educational development for her. She became a trendsetter in elementary physical education during her twelve-year career at Nora Elementary School, Washington Township. Mildred's influence also brought stronger physical education programs to Westfield and Carmel elementary schools and the foundation for the physical education program at St Matthew's Catholic School. She created programs specifically for Special Education students and always incorporated her love for music in rhythm and movement activities. Mildred often said that after Bill's active duty service in two wars (WW II and Korean War), having twenty-seven years of teaching experience, and raising two children through college-age, she was ready to retire to Sweetwater Lake in Brown County to begin a new chapter in her life. And that is just what happened.
Bill and Mildred enjoyed twenty-one years family activities at Sweetwater Lake and spent many winters in Orlando, Florida. After moving to Greenwood, IN they enjoyed the beautiful sun porch and many visits from friends and family throughout the years. Mildred "practiced what she taught" by keeping fit and involved in current affairs, sports and presenting a positive influence in the lives of everyone around her. The strong family bond that she encouraged over the years illustrates the importance of family connections and the strength of character that everyone admired in her example. Her Christian faith was a witness to a life well lived.
Mildred was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sister, Virginia Hines and brothers, Robert McKay and Charles McKay; and grandson Matthew Orme. She is survived by her sister, Janet Keith; children Bill Orme (Cathy) and Janet Brown (Bill); grandchildren Hannah Orme, Jeffrey Brown (Amber), and Mark Brown (Jennifer); and four great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at Washington Park East Cemetery, 10612 East Washington St, Indianapolis, IN, on Saturday, August 19, at 11 am. Flowers may be sent to Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service and Crematory, Greenwood Chapel, 481 West Main St, Greenwood, IN 46142. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Southport High School Alumni--Orme Family Scholarship Fund, in care of Southport High School, 971 E Banta Rd, Indianapolis, IN 46227.
