Obituary

Opal Lorene Rafdal was welcomed into the loving embrace of her Savior on Tuesday, September 28, 2021 at the age of 93. She was born on August 25, 1928 in Sandborn, Indiana to Russell and Mabel (Lind) Cleveland. Opal married Donald Rafdal on March 6, 1949 culminating a courtship that started with a pen pal relationship during World War II while he served in the Navy. After a short time in Story City, Iowa, they established their longtime home in Indianapolis. There they were blessed with three sons: Kevin (Pamela) Rafdal of Dayton, OH, Mark (Cheryl) Rafdal of Rochester Hills, MI, and James (Kathryn) Rafdal of Carmel, IN. . Opal was a dedicated member of St. John Lutheran Church in Indianapolis where she was active in choir, Ladies' Aid and bible study. She graduated from Sandborn High School earning the distinction of valedictorian. Opal enjoyed time with family, watching sports, and traveling. Opal was preceded in death by her husband Donald in August 2011, her son Kevin in December 2012, her sister Mary Jane Waggoner and her brothers Robert and James Cleveland. She is survived by her sons Mark and Jim, daughters-in-law Pamela, Cheryl, Kathryn and seven grandchildren: Carmen Rafdal of Dayton, OH, Craig (Becky) Rafdal of Denver, CO, Kristen Rafdal of Indianapolis, Lauren (Caleb) Strauser of Half Moon Bay, CA, Kurt Rafdal of Carmel, IN, Lisa (Adam) Legler of Indianapolis and Rachel Rafdal of Madison Heights, MI, and a great granddaughter Sarah Mackie of Athens, OH. Opal is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Shirley Cleveland of Indianapolis and Bea Bea Rafdal of Denver, CO and several cherished nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held from 10:00 am to 11:00 am on Monday, October 4, 2021 at St. John Lutheran Church located at 6630 Southeastern Ave. in Indianapolis. The funeral service will follow immediately at 11:00 am with burial at the St John Cemetery. Rev. Luke Watt will officiate. The service will be live-streamed which can be accessed on the church's website https://www.stjohnindy.org/. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John Lutheran Church of Indianapolis.
