Obituary

RICHARD HENRY PAUL, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully at the age of 99 Wednesday morning, April 4. Known by family and friends as "Dick," Mr. Paul passed away from natural causes after two days in hospice -- during which he was accompanied by family love and blessed ministry.

A native of Kentland, Indiana, and the son of Otto and Marie Paul, Dick graduated with honors in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University in 1941 and then moved to Indianapolis. He then met Billie Speitel of Indianapolis and in 1944 the two were married. They celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary last summer. Dick experienced a highly successful career in the tire and rubber industry -- retiring as a Vice President for Uniroyal in 1987. He was a career-long chemical engineer, an international troubleshooter for needy tire companies, and an inventor and innovator of tire concepts.

An avid pianist, tennis player, golfer, fisherman, and card player, Dick was very active well into his retirement years. He also was a student of science and nature, delving into many books, documentaries, and articles over the years. Upon occasion, he would say that if a person will behold the amazing patterns of nature, this will help that person sense the handiwork of a divine creator.

Born Feb. 24, 1919, Dick was able to report the earlier eras of the 20th Century -- including pre-television and early-automotive chapters in American society -- and small-town living before he moved to Indianapolis. Family and friends agree, just the same, that he was "hip" to many modern trends as the decades rolled along. Above all, he was an unassuming, sharing, and caring man, husband, and father.

He is survived by his wife Billie and sons Jeff, John, and David. He is preceded in passing by his first son Richard Frederick Paul. Younger generation survivors are granddaughter Dr. Kelly Loraine Paul, grandson Richard William Paul, great grandson Elijah Paul, and great granddaughter Jolene Paul.
